14NOV08  AND THE REVIEWS STREAM IN...
John Heavens' debut album is an impressive affair. Funky, witty and diverse, this collection of originals (a very appealing voice and guitar take on "Nature Boy" seems to belong to a very contrasting, as yet unreleased standards album) recalls the Brit-Funk of The Average White band and the English Soul of those mid-seventies delights, Kokomo. more

14NOV08  BIG CITY CALLING BAND LINE-UP FINALISED
The BCC band has been described as ‘a stellar cast of UK singers, horn players and a delightfully funky Andrea Vicari on piano’ – Ian Shaw, BBC Jazz Best Vocalist 2007. These really are the cream of the UK Jazz and Gospel music scene.

14NOV08 John Heavens in Collaboration with Rapper Jahaziel
Dictionary on line - ‘Rap -To communicate (a message)’ Rapper and 2008 MOBO winner Jahaziel had become the number one choice on the UK music scene working with Craig David, Daniel Beddingfield and Lemar. John’s decision to include Rap on his Big City Calling album took him in search of the best. “I was working on the track Monday on Freedom Street and a real street feel was coming out. I had a twelve bar passage in the tune which I hadn’t penned lyrics for and I was originally going to make it a solo instrumental part. As is often the case, I left the tune alone for a while and it was when I was driving one day thinking about the feel I ‘heard a Rap lyric’ and it seemed to fit. When Jahaziel came to the studio to record he nailed it in one amazing take!

14NOV08 Charity Event a Success – The Junction Cambridge Friday 12th Sept '08
John supports Befriend Indian orphanage
A recent feature appears in the latest Befriend newsletter on their website. The link with Befriend was via a friend and fellow band member Paul Mangell. “I play in a UK blues band occasionally and we were asked to do a gig for an Indian orphanage. I didn’t think much about it at the time. Helmi (Van den Berg) gave a short talk about their work at the gig and then sent me a DVD and I was totally inspired by what they had achieved with so little. I guess I’m a bit of a philanthropist at heart and having a purpose greater than just my music gives the BCC project a whole new meaning. I dedicated the Cambridge gig to Befriend which raised £1,000 for the charity.
